Power, plain English, and the rise of modern poetry

A tightly argued piece of criticism, deploying close reading and sustained analysis with equal skill. Since it deals neither with my discipline (history) nor my period (early modern England), I must take much of the later book on faith; but the first chapter on John Locke seems both incisive and accurate.
